Your webcam’s indicator light is on, so the camera is clearly receiving power and is active, yet the video feed itself is completely black. This is a common and usually fixable problem, but it points to a handful of different causes depending on exactly when it happens.
Most webcam indicator lights are wired directly to the power circuit, not to the video output, so the light coming on confirms the camera has power and, in many models, that some application has requested access to it. It does not confirm that a usable image is being captured or transmitted. A black feed with the light on usually means something between the sensor and the app displaying it is failing, not that the camera has no power at all.
A physical privacy cover or slider left closed is the simplest and most overlooked cause, worth checking before anything else. Another application already holding exclusive access to the camera can also produce a black feed in a second app, since many webcams only support one active connection at a time. Outdated or corrupted camera drivers, and occasionally an overlay or virtual camera app interfering with the feed, are the next most common causes.
Close every other application that might be using the camera, including background apps you might not think of, like a chat client set to auto-launch. Restart the specific application showing the black feed before restarting the whole computer. If a physical cover or slider exists, check it in good lighting, since some are easy to miss at a glance.
The free Online PC Doctor Webcam Test gives you a clean, single-purpose check outside your usual video call software, which helps confirm whether the problem is with the camera itself or specific to one app. If the test also shows black, the issue is more likely the camera, driver, or a system-level permission; if the test works fine, the problem is probably isolated to the other app.
Can a black feed mean the webcam is permanently broken? It’s possible but uncommon. Most black-feed issues trace back to software, permissions, or a physical cover rather than a dead sensor.
Why does the light stay on even when nothing is using the camera? On some devices, the light can stay on briefly after an app releases the camera, or a background process may still be holding a connection you’re not aware of.
