📝 Microphone Test: Check Browser Permission and Input Level
September 21, 2026
“They can’t hear me” rarely means a broken microphone. In almost every case it is one of three things: the browser was never granted permission, the wrong microphone is selected, or the input level is too low. All three can be separated in a couple of minutes.
Permission is asked per site
Browsers manage microphone access site by site. Permission granted on one site does not carry to another. Clicking the icon to the left of the address bar shows the current state for the site you are on.
If you once dismissed the permission prompt with “block”, the browser will never ask again — it simply refuses, silently. This is the single most common and most time-wasting cause, and it has to be reversed manually.
Which microphone is actually selected?
Laptops have at least two microphones: the built-in one and whatever is in the headset you plugged in. Webcams bring their own as well. The system picks a default, and that choice is frequently not the one you expect.
The microphone test shows the input level live while you speak. If the meter never moves while you talk, the wrong device is selected or permission is blocked. If it moves but barely registers, the level is too low.
Level: too much is worse than too little
- Too quiet: listeners strain, and background noise sits at the same level as your voice.
- Too loud: the signal clips and distorts — and once recorded, clipping cannot be repaired.
- About right: during normal speech the meter should move through the middle of its range without pinning at the top.
Do not hold the microphone too close. Breath noise and popping on hard consonants are usually a distance problem rather than a quality problem.
Echo and hum
If the other side hears their own voice coming back, the fault is on your speakers: sound is leaving them and re-entering your microphone. Headphones fix this instantly.
For persistent hum, try a different port first. If you also suspect something on the output side, check it separately with the speaker and stereo test.
Frequently asked questions
It works in the test but not in my meeting app.
Select the device manually in that application’s audio settings. Applications do not always follow the system default.
I sound muffled.
Check whether something is covering the microphone. On laptops the opening sits above or beside the keyboard and is easily blocked by a hand or a case.
Can a browser measure microphone quality?
No. A browser can confirm that sound is arriving and show its level. It cannot measure frequency response or build quality.
