📝 Basic Windows Security Checks
August 13, 2026
Securing a Windows computer does not require wrestling with complicated settings. This article lists the basic Windows security steps anyone can check in a few minutes.
Windows Update
Security updates are the most fundamental way to close known vulnerabilities. Check Settings > Windows Update to confirm your system is current, and keep automatic updates turned on.
Windows Defender and the firewall
Windows built-in security software, Windows Defender, provides a basic layer of protection as long as real-time protection is on. Confirming the firewall is enabled also helps block unwanted inbound connections.
Account and password security
- Use a strong, hard-to-guess password for your Windows account
- Enable an extra verification method such as Windows Hello (PIN, fingerprint) where possible
- Reserve the administrator account for when it is actually needed, not daily use
What a browser can and cannot show
Online PC Doctor tools such as PC Health Check and Browser Security Check show system and privacy signals that are safely readable from a browser. Windows Defender status, firewall configuration, and the list of installed programs live at the operating system level and are outside what a browser can reach; check those directly in Windows Settings.
Conclusion
Most of Windows security comes down to checking a few basic settings regularly: updates, Defender/firewall status, and your account password. Reviewing your browser-side privacy settings alongside those rounds out your overall security.
